In the "Biblical Perspective" notes on this verse, Dr. Marsh Jones writes:
The apostle used a metaphor to explain the behavior of a Christian. The fruit that a tree bears obviously depends on the kind of tree. Likewise, the fruit that a person bears in his life depends on whether he has availed himself of salvation through faith. Christians will bear fruit.
