Model of Prayer

After this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. (v. 9)
A model is a visual representation of something that is worth copying. Models are used to help learners understand a difficult concept; to explain the steps for completing a project; or to inspire observers to want to follow the model. There are business models, fashion models, and role models – just to name a few.
So why did the disciples ask for a model prayer? Did they need information or inspiration? Jesus did not ask. But He did give them what they requested. So how does this model prayer help us? Is it a magic formula that, if correctly followed, guarantees success? Hardly.
Perhaps Jesus knew that we needed confirmation that it is okay with God to ask Him for our daily needs. Perhaps He knew that we needed to be reminded that praise is a part of prayer; that worship opens the door to the throne room of God. Perhaps He wanted to remind us to think globally rather than just locally.
So here is the model prayer that Jesus gave. How will you use it today? Heartless ritual never brings us into the presence of God. But when we approach this model prayer with a learner’s heart we may find our prayer life revitalized. (Gordon Snider)

How Should We Surrender Our Will to God?

"Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour" (John 12:27).
In "Biblical Perspective" Randall McElwain writes:

There were two possible responses to the question, “What shall I say?” “A prayer to be saved from the hour . . . or a prayer that the Father’s name would be glorified” (New Bible Comm.). Although Jesus was troubled by the prospect of crucifixion, the first response was impossible in light of His surrender to the will of His Father. This left the second option, Father, glorify thy name. Jesus provided a model for every Christian; just as He surrendered His will to His Father’s will, we must surrender our desires, ambitions, and goals to the will of our Heavenly Father. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, a voice from heaven authenticated His min- istry (Matt. 3:17). Later, at the Transfiguration, the voice from heaven testified to His divine sonship (Luke 9:28-36). Now, at the end of His ministry, the voice from heaven testified that His death was part of the Father’s plan.

Prayer: Lesson 13 – The Gift of Sight

Heavenly Father,
Bless our teachers and classes today as they conclude this quarter on the Miracles of Jesus. Help us to realize that while You do not always choose to perform miracles of healing in response to our prayers, You are still a miracle-working God. Increase our faith in You. In Jesus' name, we pray this. Amen.
