The Key to Right Choices

Read Proverbs 3:5-10
"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (vs. 5, 6).
I have been watching the construction of a section of interstate highway to the north of our hometown. We live in an area bounteous in limestone, so the earthmoving machinery has had to move tons of material to clear the way for the leveling of the ground.
The basic promise in our text for today is that God will "clear the way" for
you - if you trust Him, if you renounce your own wisdom, if you acknowledge Him in everything. But that’s a tough program unless you have come to a place of total surrender to Him.
When we allow God to cleanse the rebellion from our wills, then the most
natural thing is for us to trust Him for wisdom to make right choices. (Leonard Sankey)

Breathe on me, breath of God, Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will, to do and to endure. - Edwin Hatch

God has given to humans the awesome power of choice; it is our responsibility to use it wisely.

The Christian Home Is Founded On Right Choices

Read Deuteronomy 30:15-20
“In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it” (v. 16).
Making the right choice is the focus of today’s scripture reading. Verses 15, 16, 17, and 19 refer directly to the decision to be made. The other two relate the consequences of the pathways that we choose.
Remember Alice in Wonderland? She came to a fork in the road she was following. Unsure, she lifted her eyes upward and saw the Cheshire cat leering at her from his perch in the tree above. “Which way should I go?” blurted Alice. “That depends,” said the cat, fixing a strange smile on her. “On what?” Alice managed to reply. “On your destination. Where are you going?” queried the cat. “I don’t know,” stammered Alice. “Then,” said the cat, with a grin spreading wider, “it doesn’t matter.”
Alice’s dilemma seems to be the condition in too many families today. Unless a husband and wife decide where they are going and determine to take the road to that destination, their lives and those of their children will be aimless. All too often, people simply wander through life, sampling its pleasures and delights. For such people, it doesn’t matter which road they choose.
A Christian couple chooses to journey to the land that God has promised. The path that they follow does matter, for them and their children, time and eternity. (Steve Hight)

Right choices send us in the right direction.

Choose Only the Best

But one thing is needful and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:42)
Martha, rushing back and forth preparing to serve a meal for at least twenty, glanced to where her sister Mary sat, and murmured to herself, “What is she doing? Does she not realize her responsibilities? She is wasting her time!”
Life can be extremely hectic and stressful with barely a solitary moment. That is how life is many times, but in all this, am I allotting God only a moment of my time? Have I confined Him to the devotional room yet not invited Him into the kitchen? Have I greeted Him at the door in the morning then left Him behind as I labor “for Him”? Have I heard His sweet invitation to learn of Him yet neglected to come, be still at His feet when He would speak to me?
As His child and disciple, I must carefully guard my time. The devil would use genuine responsibilities and jobs that have to be done to prevent me from having any quality time with Jesus. If I do not spend quality time learning of Jesus through His Word and prayer daily than I have failed to honor Him with my time and cut myself off from my spiritual food. My one-on-one time with Jesus is the most crucial part of the day. If it fails to take place, whatever prevented it from happening is now driving a wedge between me and God.
My responsibilities are an important part of my service to God; however, in Christ’s eyes one thing must be my first priority: Listening coupled with obeying His voice. (Erika Fenstermaker)

“Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.” — Jesus (Matthew 6:33)
