Respect Your Students

Regardless of their “station in life,” students come to class with concerns and needs. Responses you see from a student are often reactions to situations of which you are unaware. As a teacher of adults, your relationship with the students in the class is key to the success of the lesson you come prepared to teach. By showing respect to students, you create an environment that is winsome and conducive to learning. Although time with the class may be in short segments, showing genuine concern and respect for everyone who comes to class is one way to demonstrate Christ’s love. Remember that each one is created in God’s image, and Jesus died for them. Showing Christ’s love in tangible ways to your students is a huge first step toward their success as a learner and your success as a teacher.

The Value of God’s Word

Read 2 Timothy 3:14-17
“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (v. 15).
Have you ever learned a skill you were not too interested in following? I recently helped a general contractor install a large recreational vehicle park. I learned to operate some heavy equipment, install plumbing, and do earth moving work. At the close of the project, I mentioned to the fellows who had taught me, “Hope I never need these skills again.”
There are areas of life though that we need! Not every believer is wise regarding finances, or relationships. Every Christian, who knows the Word of God, is wise regarding his eternal hope. Paul is encouraging Timothy to understand that the Scriptures give clear and strong teaching regarding salvation by faith in Christ. (G. Clair Sams)
I know not why God’s wondrous grace
To me He hath made known,
Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
Redeemed me for His own.
But “I know Whom I have believed,
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.”
— Daniel W. Whittle

Dealing with Tension

How should a teacher deal with tension in class? If the teacher encourages spirited discussion, there is the possibility for tension. If the tension is created because of differences of opinion, the teacher will want to facilitate respect for the opinions expressed. If the tension is created because a student is propounding a concept that is counter to the Scripture, the teacher should turn the attention of the class to what the Bible says about the topic. If the teacher or no one in the class is familiar with a biblical response to the discussion, the teacher can postpone continuation of the discussion with the promise to research biblical evidence regarding the topic. The class can also be invited to research the topic, and discussion can continue at the next class period. It is incumbent on the teacher to remain respectful but to provide a scriptural perspective in these situations.

Quickened by the Spirit

Read Romans 8:9-11
“But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you” (v. 11).
Have you met believers who routinely say something like “Sometimes I am not in the Spirit but in the flesh”? That has always puzzled me. I don’t understand how, in light of today’s scripture, a believer can be “in the Spirit” one moment and “not in the Spirit” another moment.
When Christ comes into our lives, the Spirit of God makes that same body alive to righteousness. The “quickening” makes us aware and sensitive to sin. It empowers and enables a believer to live the life of righteousness. Sin no longer controls our lives when the Holy Spirit is dwelling within us. Just as only God can bring about physical life in a woman’s womb, only God the Holy Spirit can give our earthly bodies the power to live a life of righteousness. (LeeAnn Davison)
Holy Spirit, all divine,
Dwell within this heart of mine;
Cast down every idol throne,
Reign supreme, and reign alone.
